Santa Monica has a rich history of LGBTQ+ culture, activism, and community. Over the 20th century, several stretches of the beach became known as destinations for the gay community, along with a number of local bars and businesses. Much of this history was coded or went unrecorded for individuals’ safety, as LGBTQ+ people were subject to discrimination and police harassment. However, activist organizations have since fostered a more welcoming and open community.
