Phillips Chapel CME Church in 1908
The first African American church in Santa Monica began in a former schoolhouse at the corner of Fourth and Bay Streets. Named for its founder, Bishop Charles Phillips, the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) church was rebuilt in 1949 and designated a city landmark in 2005.
