The Beach Club That Never Came to Be
In 1957, African American entrepreneur Silas White aimed to open the Ebony Beach Club on Ocean Avenue to serve the Belmar community and Bay Street Beach. The City of Santa Monica seized the property using eminent domain and, despite a legal challenge, demolished it in 1960.
