The Beach and Piers

People still flock Santa Monica’s beaches to surf, swim, and exercise on what became the first Muscle Beach. Over the twentieth century, the city built piers to encourage both recreation and industry. The Santa Monica Pier, the first concrete pier on the West Coast, opened in 1909. In addition to its famous carousel, hippodrome, and amusement park, the pier once housed ballrooms, which were popular spots for dancing.
