Early Mexican and Spanish settlers were known as Californios. In 1839, the Mexican government granted Rancho Boca de Santa Monica – land now known as the Palisades and Santa Monica Canyon – to the Marquez and Reyes families. Their families worked the rancho and sold parcels as the area became more populated. Their descendants still live in the area, and the Marquez family cemetery still exists on San Lorenzo Street.
