Growing Santa Monica

While the indigenous Gabrielino, Tongva, and Chumash peoples inhabited the area for centuries, Santa Monica was claimed by Spanish and Mexican settlers before it was established as a California town in 1875. It quickly grew into an attractive tourist city, booming in the early part of the twentieth century with a range of architecture and resort businesses, including the beach-based pier and bath houses.
