Vernon Brunson

Vernon Brunson, one of the first Black children born in Santa Monica at the turn of the twentieth century, became a polymathic engineer, writer, and building designer. He created designs for numerous residential and commercial buildings and many of the Black churches in Santa Monica. He also contributed to the design of City Hall and sat on the City’s architectural review board. A respected community member and lifelong resident, Brunson helped to build the foundations of Santa Monica.
